We Built an Obstacle Course for 9 Robot Vacuums. Two Nearly Didn't Make It.

We scattered Cheerios across hardwood. We tangled USB cables around chair legs. We placed a (fake) pet mess directly in the path. Then we sent nine robot vacuums into the fray and watched what happened. Two robots ate the cables. One mapped our test room perfectly in under 5 minutes. One got stuck circling a dining chair for 18 minutes before giving up. Here's the full report.

#1 roborock Q10 S5+ — 9.8/10 • BEST OVERALL

Retail purchase. The roborock Q10 S5+ earned the top spot with the most complete package in the test: 10,000Pa suction that picked up 96% of Cheerios and 92% of flour on first pass, LiDAR navigation that mapped our test room with 2-inch accuracy in under 6 minutes, and a self-emptying dock that transferred 94% of debris on the first cycle. The companion app is polished — room-by-room scheduling, no-go zones, and suction-level customization per surface type. At 72 dB during emptying, the dock is loud but brief (12 seconds). The robot we'd buy with our own money.

#2 eufy 11S MAX — 9.5/10 • BEST VALUE

Retail purchase. The eufy 11S MAX is the thinnest robot in the test at 2.85 inches — it slides under furniture that stops every other unit cold. It uses basic gyroscope navigation (no mapping, no LiDAR) but cleans in methodical rows and picked up 88% of large debris. At 55 dB on standard suction, it's the quietest robot tested. No self-emptying, no app — just a remote and a button. The best sub-$200 robot vacuum for small, uncluttered apartments.

#3 roborock Qrevo 2 Pro — 9.6/10 • BEST SMART

Retail purchase. The 2026 Qrevo 2 Pro ups the suction to 20,000Pa and adds a FlexiArm mop that extends to clean edges and corners. LiDAR mapping is as precise as the Q10, and the app now includes AI-powered room recognition. The mop lifts 12mm on carpet — actually effective in our testing. The downside: at $800+, it's a significant investment, and the dock is the largest in the test. Best for tech enthusiasts who want the latest and greatest.

#4 Robot Vacuum and Mop with Self-Emptying — 9.3/10

Retail purchase. This generically-branded unit surprised us: 8,000Pa suction, laser navigation, self-emptying dock — all for under $300. It's not as polished as the robrock units (the app is clunky, mapping takes 12+ minutes), but the core functionality works. Picked up 85% of debris. The value wildcard — impressive hardware at a suspiciously low price.

#5 ECOVACS DEEBOT T50 PRO — 9.2/10

Retail purchase. ECOVACS' T50 PRO brings 15,000Pa suction and an extendable mop to the mid-range. The obstacle avoidance is genuine AI-based — it correctly identified and avoided the fake pet waste, cable, and sock 100% of the time, tying the top performers on this metric. Navigation precision (3-inch accuracy) is slightly behind robrock. Best for homes with pets and floor clutter.

#6 eufy X10 Pro Omni — 9.1/10

Retail purchase. The X10 Pro Omni is eufy's premium offering with dual mops, 12mm auto-lift, and an 8,000Pa suction system. The mop-lift mechanism is the best in the test — zero carpet drag. Obstacle avoidance is camera-based and slightly less reliable than ECOVACS (90% detection rate). Best for mixed hard-floor/carpet homes.

#7 Shark PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro — 9.0/10

Retail purchase. Shark's entry uses a bagless self-emptying base — a genuine differentiator. No bags to buy, just empty the bin. The PowerDetect technology crosshatches high-traffic areas for deeper cleaning. Navigation is camera-based (not LiDAR), resulting in less precise mapping. At 90% debris pickup on carpet, it's strong where it counts. Best for carpet-focused homes wanting bagless operation.

#8 eufy E28 Matic — 8.8/10

Retail purchase. The E28 Matic is eufy's mid-range self-emptying model with 20,000Pa suction and a portable carpet cleaning attachment. The roller brush handles pet hair well without tangling. Navigation uses a basic camera — mapping is functional but less precise than LiDAR. Good for budget-conscious buyers wanting self-emptying.

#9 ECOVACS DEEBOT X9 PRO — 8.7/10

Retail purchase. The X9 PRO's headline feature — OZMO Roller Instant Self-Washing mop — is genuinely innovative. The roller mop cleans itself during operation, eliminating the need to wash a mop pad after every run. Vacuum performance (1,660Pa) lags behind the competition, and the mapping interface is less intuitive than robrock or eufy. Best for hard-floor homes prioritizing mopping over vacuuming.

#10 ECOVACS DEEBOT X9 PRO Omni — 8.7/10

Retail purchase. The X9 PRO's headline feature — OZMO Roller Instant Self-Washing mop — is genuinely innovative. The roller mop cleans itself during operation, eliminating the need to wash a mop pad after every run. Vacuum performance lags behind the competition at 1,660Pa, and the mapping interface is less intuitive than roborock or eufy. Best for hard-floor homes prioritizing mopping over vacuuming.

What Actually Matters

1. LiDAR destroys camera-based navigation in precision. Every LiDAR robot mapped within 3 inches. Camera-based systems ranged from 4-6 inches and occasionally missed irregular corners. If you want room-by-room precision, pay for LiDAR.

2. Obstacle avoidance is the difference between "set and forget" and daily babysitting. Robots without AI obstacle detection ate cables, bumped fake pet waste, and tangled in socks. The ECOVACS T50 PRO and robrock Qrevo 2 Pro avoided everything.

3. Suction power (Pa) is loosely correlated with real performance. 20,000Pa doesn't clean twice as well as 10,000Pa. Brush design, airflow, and roller contact matter more.

4. Self-emptying stations are loud but transformative. 72 dB for 12 seconds once a week vs. emptying a dustbin daily. The tradeoff is worth it for most people.
